Our Journey of Redefining Urban Mining

Our Journey of Redefining Urban Mining

At Wastezon, we are applying a systems thinking approach to resolve e-waste challenges while digitizing communities and providing secondary raw materials. We are combining AI technology and Materials Science to trace the materiality of e-waste(s) and valorize them accordingly. Besides generating low-cost refurbished devices for consumers, we also obtain secondary raw materials that we sell to Manufacturers. By serving both fronts, consumers and manufacturers, we are creating a closed-loop system, ensuring that materials are kept in use as long as possible, diverting them from going to landfills. Not only are our efforts diverting equivalent carbon emissions but also eradicating associated waste pollution while ensuring cities are waste-free and healthy.

As the world embarks on rethinking consumerism and production in alignment with the circular economy,  I founded Wastezon, a Rwanda-based social enterprise that redefines urban mining. Roughly 45 million tons of e-waste end up in landfills annually, contributing to carbon emissions and polluting water bodies.

This calls immediate attention to restrategizing our consumerism and production systems, ensuring materials are reused, recycled, and remanufactured (urban mining). The fascinating aspect of tapping into urban mining is that we can tackle further associated challenges alternatively. For example, 300 million Africans are still digitally excluded as device affordability and accessibility hinder them from joining and reaping the benefits of digitalization.

In addition, urban mining can provide secondary raw materials that the manufacturing sector highly relies on, concurrently enabling them to decarbonize their processes.

With over 10 employees, Wastezon takes pride in a Gender4Climate approach. Not only are 60% of our workforce women, but we also take a central role in targeting eco-conscious women consumers who receive our refurbished devices. We recently initiated a sales agents community dominated by women who are eager to facilitate their fellow women consumers to get our refurbished devices while also assisting them in the initial digital onboarding experience. We are overwhelmingly inspired by the passion of our sales agents, who not only demonstrate the need for women-led climate action efforts but also indicate how community support can accelerate such efforts. We aim to learn and unlearn strategies that can continuously reinforce the Gender4Climate approach in product design,

In October 2023, we were awarded financial and bespoke capacity-building support from UNDP Youth4Climate. Such recognition empowers us to extend our reach and impact and motivates us to keep envisioning innovative solutions. Under this grant program, we will expand our refurbishment lab, acquiring new equipment that can boost our refurbishment capacity. We will also expand our door-to-door sales agents’ network, facilitating individuals’ access to our low-cost refurbished devices.

We are excited to embark on this journey with UNDP Youth4Climate as we bring innovative urban mining solutions to the world.

Introduction The global statistics on waste production and material reuse are staggering, and often, the sheer scale of the problem can be overwhelming. Despite various efforts, waste production continues to grow at an alarming rate, far outstripping population growth, particularly in the case of e-waste.

The Vast Scale of Waste Production As of 2023, the world produced 2.3 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste, equating to roughly 285 kg for every person on the planet. This production rate is growing twice as fast as the population, and for e-waste, it’s growing three times faster.

Wastezon’s Role, we are committed to tackling this issue head-on. Through our innovative solutions, we aim to significantly reduce the volume of e-waste and promote sustainable practices. Wastezon 2.0 provides a seamless platform for managing e-waste, ensuring more materials are recycled and reused.

We’re used to thinking of our relationship with stuff in a straight line: make, use, throw away. But this outdated model is wreaking havoc on the planet. It’s time for a new approach: the circular economy. This system is all about keeping resources in use for as long as possible, and Wastezon is at the forefront of making this shift happen, particularly when it comes to our ever-growing mountain of e-waste.

E-waste: The Problem We Can’t Ignore

Did you know that electronic waste (e-waste) is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world? Old phones, computers, TVs, you name it – they’re piling up in landfills and leaching toxic materials into the environment. A massive amount of precious resources gets buried too when we could be recovering and reusing them. This isn’t just a waste; it’s a missed opportunity.

    Wastezon: Where Circularity Meets E-Waste

This is where Wastezon steps in. Our mission is to tackle the e-waste crisis by putting circular economy principles directly into action. How do we do it?

    • Collection: We make responsible disposal easy with convenient collection points and pickup options.
    • Reuse: If devices are still in working order, we find them new homes, extending their lifespan.
    • Refurbishment: Our skilled technicians bring devices back to like-new condition, giving them a second life.
    • Remanufacturing: When components can be salvaged, we extract them for use in new products.
    • Ethical Recycling: Only as a last resort, we ensure electronics are recycled safely, preventing toxins from harming the environment.

The Environmental Impact: It Adds Up

The circular economy isn’t just a feel-good idea; it has measurable benefits for the planet. By choosing Wastezon, you’re helping to:

    • Reduce Resource Extraction: Producing electronics from scratch requires mining virgin materials, a destructive process. Reuse and remanufacturing lessen this demand.
    • Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Less manufacturing often translates to lower emissions across the supply chain.
    • Preserve Landfills: Every device kept out of landfill is a win.

    Let’s Make the Circular Shift

The way we handle waste matters. Wastezon offers a simple way to make a difference, one discarded device at a time. Whether you’re an individual with an old phone to ditch or a business looking to upgrade responsibly, Wastezon has solutions. It’s a choice for the planet and a choice for the future.
