Resilience Through Ages: Biodiversity conservation through intergenerational dialogue

    About the Organization

As part of the “Resilience Through Ages” initiative, we are offering Young Artists, Storytellers, and Advocates an opportunity to participate in the implementation of the project by creating environmental storytelling and filmmaking content. The young artists will work with the Wastezon team to co-create, visually document, and illustrate several stories through 8  7-minute short films that will later be compiled into a 60-minute  docuseries. After workshops about climate resiliency and storytelling,  artists will be paired with community elders and work closely with the Wastezon’s videography team to capture and document the intersection of traditional and modern climate resiliency efforts. The produced 60-minute docuseries will be showcased in different schools across the country to inspire climate resilience among Rwandan youth in our communities.

The project was conceived after completing Biodiversity Through Ages, (BTA), a previous initiative focused on creating intergenerational dialogue in biodiversity conservation. BTA was key in promoting sustainable environmental practices and enhancing biodiversity protection. Among other activities, the project created 100 paintings that tell the stories of 100 plant and animal species at risk of extinction. These paintings are exhibited in the Kigali Green Gallery to raise awareness and share the stories of these endangered species. This initiative highlighted the importance of conservation strategies that support long-term ecosystem balance and stability. Building upon this foundation, “Resilience Through Ages” expands the focus by integrating the intergenerational exchange of knowledge, ensuring that both past wisdom and modern innovation inform conservation efforts. These two projects are intertwined, as the lessons learned from “Biodiversity Through Ages” serve as a guiding light for this new initiative, thus emphasizing the idea that resilience in biodiversity conservation requires ecological strategies and cultural continuity.

As technology becomes an essential part of daily life, the challenge of e-waste—the discarded or obsolete electronic devices—continues to grow at an alarming rate. In Africa, where digital devices are increasingly being used, the rapid accumulation of e-waste has significant environmental and health implications. Addressing this crisis requires more than innovative technology or advanced machinery; it needs people—skilled professionals who can repair, refurbish, and recycle these devices to keep them out of landfills.

Wastezon is tackling this issue head-on by empowering African technicians and building a sustainable e-waste management ecosystem. Through training and employment, Wastezon is not only helping to curb e-waste but is also creating valuable job opportunities and contributing to the development of a skilled workforce that fuels local economies. Our technicians—often members of the same communities affected by e-waste pollution—are crucial to transforming e-waste into valuable resources. This article explores the impact of empowering African technicians and how they are reshaping the future of e-waste management in Africa.

The Role of Technicians in E-Waste Management

When we think of e-waste management, we might imagine complex recycling processes and cutting-edge technology, but at the heart of it are skilled hands and minds—the technicians. These professionals are responsible for inspecting, disassembling, repairing, and repurposing discarded devices. They have the technical expertise to refurbish old laptops, smartphones, and other electronic items, giving them a new life and purpose.

At Wastezon, technicians play an essential role in every step of e-waste management. Their skills help ensure that each device is fully operational before being reintroduced to the market or donated to those in need. By fixing malfunctioning electronics or recycling valuable materials from beyond-repair devices, these technicians reduce the amount of e-waste that ends up in landfills. In turn, they help lower the demand for new devices and decrease the environmental impact of electronics production.

Training Local Talent: Building a Skilled Workforce

The need for a sustainable e-waste management system in Africa has created an opportunity to build a skilled workforce of local technicians. Wastezon invests in training programs that equip community members with the knowledge and technical skills required for e-waste management. These training programs focus on areas such as device repair, diagnostics, refurbishment, safe disassembly, and the proper handling of hazardous materials found in e-waste.

By offering these training opportunities, Wastezon ensures that technicians have a deep understanding of e-waste management best practices. In addition to technical skills, we also provide education on safety protocols, environmental regulations, and recycling processes. This holistic approach not only improves the quality of refurbished devices but also promotes a safer and more environmentally friendly way of handling e-waste.

Our training programs empower local talent, giving them the tools and confidence to become change-makers in their communities. These technicians don’t just learn a trade; they gain a pathway to financial stability and professional growth. With these skills, they can secure meaningful employment, support their families, and contribute to their community’s economic development.

      Economic Empowerment Through Employment

Wastezon’s mission is rooted in environmental sustainability, but it also includes a commitment to social impact. By employing local technicians, Wastezon is helping to build a sustainable economy in African communities. Each job opportunity we create represents a step towards economic empowerment, allowing individuals to thrive while contributing to the larger cause of environmental preservation.

For technicians, working with Wastezon means more than just a paycheck. It’s a career path with purpose and impact. These roles offer stable, dignified employment in communities where job opportunities may be scarce. As technicians improve their skills and gain experience, they also gain a sense of pride and ownership in their work. This employment not only improves their quality of life but also boosts the local economy, as more individuals have disposable income to spend and invest within their communities.

The economic benefits of employing technicians extend beyond individual families. Skilled technicians can also become mentors, passing on their expertise to the next generation and helping to build a culture of technical knowledge and innovation in their communities. As more people see the value in e-waste management, the sector has the potential to become a major contributor to Africa’s growing economy.

      Empowering Communities for Lasting Change

One of the key principles of Wastezon’s approach is community involvement. Many of our technicians are recruited from the same communities affected by e-waste pollution. By engaging these community members, Wastezon fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility for environmental issues. When technicians see firsthand the positive impact of their work, they become powerful advocates for e-waste management and environmental sustainability.

Community-based technicians are more likely to understand local needs and can act as bridges between Wastezon and the communities we serve. They can help identify local e-waste sources, educate their neighbors on the importance of recycling, and promote the benefits of refurbished devices. Their role as community advocates is instrumental in raising awareness about e-waste and encouraging responsible disposal practices.

Through this approach, Wastezon is creating a sustainable e-waste management ecosystem that operates from the ground up. When communities are involved and invested in these solutions, it leads to lasting change, as people become more proactive in protecting their environment and contributing to the circular economy.

      Redefining E-Waste Management in Africa

The impact of empowering African technicians goes beyond Wastezon. By training and employing skilled professionals, we are redefining what e-waste management can look like in Africa. This approach aligns with the principles of the circular economy, where products and resources are kept in use for as long as possible. Technicians play a crucial role in extending the lifespan of electronic devices, turning waste into resources and contributing to environmental sustainability.

Through the work of these technicians, Wastezon envisions a future where e-waste is no longer a growing crisis, but an opportunity for resource recovery and economic growth. We believe that Africa has the potential to lead the way in sustainable e-waste management, setting an example for the rest of the world.

      A Call to Action

Our mission at Wastezon is ambitious, but with the dedication of our technicians and the support of our communities, we are making progress every day. We call upon individuals, organizations, and governments to recognize the value of e-waste management and support initiatives that empower local talent. Together, we can create a future where e-waste is effectively managed, where communities are economically empowered, and where Africa becomes a leader in sustainability.

By investing in local talent and providing them with meaningful employment, Wastezon is creating a legacy of positive impact that will benefit generations to come. Through our efforts, we are not only addressing the e-waste crisis but also building a skilled workforce that will drive Africa’s economic development in a sustainable way.

In today’s rapidly advancing world, technology is the backbone of communication, education, and economic opportunity. Access to digital devices is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity for full participation in modern society. Yet, for many communities in Africa, this access remains out of reach. The digital divide—the gap between those with access to digital technologies and those without—continues to grow, leaving millions of underserved individuals isolated from the transformative power of the digital world.

At Wastezon, we are dedicated to bridging this divide by refurbishing e-waste devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops, and providing them to those who need them most. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to turn electronic waste into opportunities that empower communities and foster social inclusion. By repurposing discarded devices, we are not only reducing environmental harm but also putting vital resources into the hands of people who can use them to improve their lives.

      Why Refurbished Devices Matter

For those who can afford it, technology is an everyday convenience. But for millions across Africa, especially in low-income and rural areas, technology remains inaccessible due to high costs and limited availability. In these communities, access to a smartphone or laptop can mean the difference between being connected and being left behind. It can unlock opportunities for education, job searching, health information, and financial services.

When individuals and families gain access to digital devices, they enter a new world of possibilities. Students can access online educational resources, adults can seek new job opportunities, and families can stay connected with relatives in other regions. Digital access also provides valuable resources for entrepreneurs and small business owners who can leverage the internet to expand their reach and grow their businesses. For many, a single device can be a gateway to a brighter future.

      Transforming Lives through Technology

Through our refurbishment program, Wastezon collects e-waste, including discarded devices, and gives them new life. Our dedicated technicians repair, clean, and test each device, ensuring they are fully functional before distributing them to underserved communities. These devices, once considered waste, become tools that can transform lives and bridge the digital gap.

Take, for example, a young student in a rural village who receives a refurbished tablet. With this tablet, the student can access online lessons, tutorials, and educational games, broadening their knowledge and enhancing their learning experience. They no longer have to rely solely on limited resources within their school or community. The tablet connects them to a world of information that would have otherwise been inaccessible, setting them on a path toward academic success.

Similarly, an entrepreneur receiving a refurbished laptop can now access digital marketplaces, learn new business strategies, and manage finances online. This device becomes a critical asset, helping the entrepreneur grow their business, generate income, and uplift their community. By connecting people to information and resources, Wastezon empowers individuals to build better futures for themselves and their families.

Beyond Devices: Social Inclusion and Economic Empowerment

The impact of our refurbished devices extends beyond the individual; it ripples through entire communities. When more people in a community have access to technology, it fosters an environment of innovation, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing. Digital devices facilitate connections among people, enable the exchange of ideas, and strengthen social networks, all of which contribute to community growth and resilience.

Moreover, technology access has direct implications for economic empowerment. Studies show that increased digital connectivity leads to economic growth and job creation. By distributing refurbished devices, Wastezon is not only helping individuals access job opportunities but also stimulating the local economy. As people learn to leverage technology in their daily lives, they contribute to a skilled, digitally literate workforce that can drive economic development across Africa.

      The Environmental Impact of Refurbishment

While our mission primarily focuses on closing the digital divide, our refurbishment program also addresses another critical issue: e-waste pollution. Africa faces a growing e-waste crisis, with millions of tons of discarded electronics piling up in landfills and causing severe environmental harm. These devices contain hazardous materials that, if improperly disposed of, can contaminate soil, water, and air, posing health risks to communities.

By refurbishing and redistributing these devices, Wastezon reduces the amount of e-waste that ends up in landfills. Each device that finds a new home instead of a landfill means fewer pollutants and less strain on the environment. Our program embodies the principles of the circular economy, where products are reused and recycled rather than discarded, promoting a sustainable approach to technology consumption.

      Looking Toward the Future

As we continue to grow our efforts, Wastezon envisions a future where digital access is universal and e-waste is minimized. We aim to expand our reach, collecting more e-waste, refurbishing more devices, and empowering more communities across Africa. Our vision is that one day, every student, entrepreneur, and family will have access to the technology they need to thrive in a modern, connected world.

Closing the digital divide is no small task, but with every refurbished device, we get one step closer to making this vision a reality. Wastezon is committed to building a more inclusive and sustainable Africa, one where technology empowers individuals, uplifts communities, and drives positive change.

      Join Us on Our Mission

Closing the digital divide requires collective effort, and we invite individuals, organizations, and partners to join us in our mission. Whether it’s through donations, partnerships, or spreading awareness, every contribution counts. Together, we can turn e-waste into opportunity, bridge the digital divide, and create a future where everyone has the tools they need to succeed.
